Since 1997, our orga­ni­za­tion, CUIP (the Chicago Pub­lic Schools | Uni­ver­sity of Chicago Inter­net Project), has worked with 40 dif­fer­ent Chicago Pub­lic Schools towards sup­port­ing their efforts to improve stu­dents’ edu­ca­tion through the inte­gra­tion of tech­nol­ogy resources into their cur­ricu­lum and school cul­tures.  We pro­vide con­sul­ta­tion to teach­ers and school admin­is­tra­tors in tech­nol­ogy cur­ricu­lum inte­gra­tion, pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment, and class­room project sup­port, as well as pro­vid­ing gen­eral tech­ni­cal sup­port to the schools.   Our school-based efforts are mostly focused in the neigh­bor­hoods of: Wood­lawn, North Kenwood/Oakland, Hyde Park, Bronzeville, and South Shore, where we part­ner with the Uni­ver­sity of Chicago’s Neigh­bor­hood Schools Pro­gram (NSP) to pair Uni­ver­sity stu­dents with school tech­nol­ogy pro­grams.  We also col­lab­o­rate closely with the Chicago Pub­lic Schools Office of Aca­d­e­mic Enhance­ment (CPS OAE) on their Tech­nol­ogy Mag­net Clus­ter pro­gram which infuses tech­nol­ogy resources and train­ing in ele­men­tary schools across the city.  In addi­tion to our direct work in the schools, CUIP has cre­ated online resources that are freely avail­able to all (Chicago Web­Do­cent http://cwd.uchicago.edu/ and eCUIP the Dig­i­tal Library http://ecuip.lib.uchicago.edu/).

Our in the schools pro­gram focuses on the fol­low­ing five initiatives:

  • Prin­ci­pals’ Advi­sory & Project Management
  • Infra­struc­ture
    • Work­ing with CPS to ensure data wiring in schools, elec­tri­cal power, and com­put­ers in classrooms
  • Sys­tem Management/Maintenance
    • Devel­op­ing the capac­ity of school-based Tech­nol­ogy Coor­di­na­tors on top­ics includ­ing: net­work admin­is­tra­tion, oper­at­ing sys­tems, hard­ware & soft­ware troubleshooting.
  • Train­ing
    • Indi­vid­ual and group train­ing on best prac­tices for the inte­gra­tion of tech­nol­ogy into the class­room, as well as spe­cific tech skills.
  • Class­room Tech­nol­ogy Integration
    • Work­ing with teach­ers on all aspects of class­room tech­nol­ogy inte­gra­tion from les­son plan­ning, to train­ing, to prepar­ing stu­dents, to assisted with the class­room project activitiy.
